Exploring the Use of Narratology for Narrative Preaching

26 Jan

Clicking in this link will take you to an article I wrote for Homiletic journal in 2014 that involves a detailed study of narratology and narrative criticism and applies those concepts to narrative preaching.

The major value this paper upholds is that a better understanding of the various dynamics found within narrative biblical texts can aid the preacher in constructing narrative sermons.

This correlates with the value, as stated by homiletician Fred B. Craddock and others who follow the school of what is termed “The New Homiletic,” that the form of the biblical text from which one is preaching should have a major influence on the ultimate form taken by the sermon itself.

This paper therefore will demonstrate how to do just that, by drawing upon multiple case studies in the Old Testament book of Jonah primarily.
